Year 5 so far…
This term has been ever so busy. We have been working hard across the entire curriculum, here are a few highlights:
In Autumn 1 we had a successful Roald Dahl day reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory describing the chocolate river, we enjoyed an exciting trip to Dean Close working on our Music, Sports and Art skills, we completed a range of activities on Art Day, worked well during Maths Hour, performed confidently in our Poetry Recital and Dance Festival among many other things.
Since beginning Autumn 2 we have enjoyed debating the topic of ‘Scaring being a crime’ with Year 6 and Inspector Ellson whilst Radio Gloucester recorded our arguments, we were inspired to think forward to the future during Aspirations week and contemplated a job in the Police, RNLI, Montpellier Creative, as an MP, Oriental Cookery or Computing with a interesting talks and demonstrations from interesting visitors, including the Staff at Hester’s Way Code Club.

Year 5 Themed Learning

This term we are exploring plants, animals, life cycles, reproduction, evolution and how our body works, amongst other exciting things that make our world so wonderful.
Year 5 theme – Term 1 and 2
… Captain Valiant
We have made our own superheroes!
Year 5 theme – Term 5 and 6
… Dr Who
[dmalbum path=”/wp-content/uploads/dm-albums/y5 salsa 2015/”/]
We are looking at instructions in our English lessons. We were given a recipe to make some salsa. We worked in groups following the instructions and then got to eat our salsa afterwards.

Our theme in Year 5 is Dr Who so we decided to make some Daleks for the classroom. First of all we moulded some clay to make our Dalek. This was quite difficult because the clay was hard and there are lots of parts to a Dalek. We used our fingers to make the clay in to different shapes and the different parts of the Dalek. Once our Daleks were finished we got to paint them! This was really tricky because bits kept falling off! We had to keep gluing parts back on. Our Daleks look brilliant in our classroom!
Dissecting the Moon
[dmalbum path=”/wp-content/uploads/dm-albums/y5 dissect the moon 2015/”/]
We had some play dough to make a moon, to show the three parts of the moon. The three parts are the crust, the mantle and the core. The core is the middle bit, then the mantle is the second bit and the crust is on the outside. Owen Heaney
All Saints Taster Day
[dmalbum path=”/wp-content/uploads/dm-albums/y5 ASA taster 2015/”/]
We went on a minibus to All Saints and Mr McNiffe introduced us to everyone. We got to do trampolining first, then Science, then Technology. In trampolining we learnt to do a tuck, jump, pike and straddle. In Science we had to wear goggles to figure out who stole the schools star trophy. We used acid with magnesium and metals, the magnesium fizzed when we put acid in. We looked at hairs in a microscope and we tested some pens. In technology, some of us went to make boxes, and some of us did cooking and made some delicious cakes. We had to decorate our boxes which had two cakes in that we made and decorated too. We had a fabulous time!

Y5 are out of this world!
On Wednesday 3rd June, a man named Bob came in to school with his planetarium. He told us lots of amazing facts and we enjoyed every minute of it!’ says by Brandon Njengah.
‘It was awesome, I found out loads of cool stuff!’ said Owen Heaney. ‘My favourite fact was that there’s more stars in the universe than grains of sand from every beach in the world’ said Chris Neale.

Year 5 theme – Term 3 and 4
… Greece is the word
In year 5 our theme is ‘Greece is the word’ and we are submersing ourselves in all things Greek! We have already looked at modern day Greece and written some persuasive brochure extracts to entice readers to visit.
We are now looking at Greek myths! We have really enjoyed reading Theseus and the Minotaur, we even read a play script and acted it out! Now we are looking at Perseus and the Gorgans head. We will soon be expert mythologists.
As part of our theme we have researched the two main cities in Ancient Greece, Athens and Sparta. They are very different, we imagined how life would be if we were a young boy or a young girl growing up in one of these cities.
We have some exciting things planned for the rest of the term, learning the Greek alphabet, visiting a museum for a Greek workshop, designing our own Greek clothes and having a Greek banquet. We can’t wait!
On Wednesday 11th of March we got on the bus and went to the museum. We had 3 activities to do, first Owen put on a robe. We all got to dig in sand looking for artefacts and we used crayon and paint on a plate to make it look Greek.
